Insurance record
The allocation and calculation of an insured person's pension under the general pension scheme are always based on an insurance record made up of insurance periods.
Persons who are employed in Luxembourg in the private sector or who are self-employed, or who can provide evidence of periods treated as equivalent to such periods of employment, are subject to compulsory insurance under the general pension insurance scheme.
A distinction is made between periods covered by contributions and periods not covered by contributions.
The periods covered by contributions are as follows:
- compulsory insurance periods,
- voluntary insurance periods,
- retroactive purchase periods.
The periods not covered by contributions are as follows:
- additional periods which take into account different life situations. Additional periods are only considered insofar as they do not overlap with Luxembourg or international periods covered by contributions.
The Joint Social Security Centre is responsible for enrolling insured persons and determining and collecting contributions.
