Insurance record

Each pension is calculated on the basis of the individual's insurance record.

The insurance record may consist of periods completed in Luxembourg and in a country with which Luxembourg is linked by a multi- or bilateral social security instrument. The inclusion of all insurance periods and additional periods in the single scheme makes the definition of a unit of insurance duration unavoidable.

Calculation unit

Luxembourg insurance periods are counted exclusively in calendar months. A whole month is taken into account if at least 64 hours of employed activity or 10 calendar days of self-employed activity have been completed. Fractions of months below these thresholds are carried forward to the following months. Salaries and pensionable income are attached to the month to which they relate.

This method of calculating the insurance record per month has been valid since 1.1.1988.

Prior to this date, insurance periods with the “Etablissement d'assurance contre la vieillesse et l'invalidité” were counted in days.

These insured days are converted into insured months by dividing the total number of days by a factor of 22.5.

Example:
Total days insured up to 31.12.87: 6.345
6.345 : 22.5 = 282 months of insurance

For periods completed before 1.1.1988 with the “Caisse de pension des employés privés”, any fraction of a month counts as a full month provided it comprises more than fifteen calendar days. Otherwise, it is disregarded.

Checking the insurance record

A career record is sent annually to each person not receiving a personal pension who has been insured under the general pension scheme during the year preceding the sending. It is advisable to check the accuracy of this statement.

From the age of 55, the career statement provides information on the estimated amount of a possible pension.

Remarks:

  • Any additional periods (e.g. studies, child-raising, etc.) to be taken into account are determined at the time of the pension application and do not appear on the career statement.
  • People who are no longer insured do not receive this annual statement.
